A person may have a distorted perception of smells or a complete loss of smell in case of necrotic and chronic rhinitis, coronavirus, stroke and concussion. Therapist Andrei Zvonkov told a URA.RU correspondent regarding this.
“There is such an inflammation in the nasopharynx, which is called necrotic rhinitis. This is a severe purulent disease that affects the nasal mucosa from the inside, straight to blackness. When you look into the nasopharynx, and there are black spots – this is necrosis, that is, dead tissue. When there is swelling in chronic rhinitis, a person often does not smell odors or only sharp ones. The most striking manifestation of a violation of taste and smell occurred during the COVID epidemic,” Andrey Zvonkov said.
Similar symptoms can be observed not only in diseases of the respiratory system, the therapist noted. “Violations of taste and smell can occur at the same time, for example, in very specific strokes, when blood circulation in the frontal region is disturbed. Then the behavior changes a lot. Injuries and concussions can cause disturbances in the perception of taste and smell, ”the doctor said.
