What is the AT for you?

It is the result of a sociocultural transformation, of a series of values of humanism… In the 50s, people began to question why people had to be imprisoned/excluded. The AT is part of this sensitivity.

With what population do you think the AT works?

With those erroneously called “mentally ill”, a concept that does not correctly name what happens to people with mental suffering.

Do you have an alignment with psychoanalysis?

Yes, totally. Part of Winnicott, who worked a lot with seriously ill patients.

Do you think in terms of psychic structures?

I think we have to name them, because if we don’t name the difference it is more difficult to denounce domination and power. Men and women must be named because the former have exercised power over them; It must be stated that there are whites and blacks because the latter have been dominated. Therefore, neurotic and psychotic structures must be named because the former have exercised power over them.

Is the AT an official race in Spain?

The AT in Spain does not exist. What I do here is inform. I do my work as a therapist from the AT tool but they hire me as a therapist.

In Argentina, AT may be recognized as official within the health system. What do you think?

That is one thing that worries me a lot Pía; I am very much in favor of disclosure/expansion; It seems to me to be a very powerful tool, very human, and I think that one of the problems is this university expansion of the AT, I have entered into debates on social networks. If universities have professors who have never done AT, it doesn’t work.

In Argentina it is said that you have to work with empathy. What do you think?

It is not enough, if it were enough there would be no need for training, therapy, and supervision.

A recommendation for someone who is starting/delving into AT?

I tell my students “go for it, you are training, seek supervision, that is, have people with references accompany you; whoever accompanies you so that you can accompany. I believe that it should be prohibited by law to do this work alone. Without reference equipment, protection, training, supervision, this makes the companion sick. In all the cases that I know of, the bond with the accompanied people ends up going down very strange paths.

Thank you very much Leonel for your time, and your willingness.

Thanks to you, Pia.
