The family, who run a bakery in Londerzeel in Flemish Brabant, were hoping for another stay but are happy to see 14-year-old Stien still alive. Because during the holidays in Croatia, the teenager had health problems which worsened due to a bad diagnosis. “Stien had diarrhea and there was blood in his stool,” his mother, Griet, told Laatste Nieuws.
In the hospital, an inflammation of the pancreas or an infection is suspected. Stien is given intravenous antibiotics before being fired. “They thought it was a viral infection,” adds Griet. The young girl’s state of health will, for a few hours, improve. But the next day, things got worse. Contact was therefore made with the general practitioner in Belgium to obtain an opinion of confidence. “He advised us to hydrate well and go home.” A piece of advice taken at face value: the family cut short their vacation by a week to return home in order to treat Stien properly.
Once in Belgium, she went directly to the emergency room. Balance sheet? “Our daughter suffered from severe kidney failure due to the wrong medication. His body was poisoned. In reality, the young girl had been infected with an E.Coli bacterium. Thanks to the quick reaction of the doctors, Stien was able to be treated properly, not without spending ten days in intensive care. Still in the hospital, but in a service for children, she should be able to return to school on September 1st.
