A 50-year-old man was arrested by authorities on Thursday for the theft of the frame signed by Jean Béliveau which was stolen during the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, but the object remains untraceable.

Remember that the frame containing a black and white photo of the famous hockey player was stolen on the evening of February 11, around 7:30 p.m., from a souvenir kiosk in the amphitheater.

In the days following the theft, the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) released surveillance camera images to find a potential witness to the affair.

The police finally carried out a search in the residence of a suspect living in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste sector and arrested him.

The authorities are, however, unable to specify whether or not this is the same man as the one who was sought as a witness.

“He was released on a promise to appear and the file will be submitted to bring charges of theft,” indicates David Poitras, spokesperson for the SPVQ.

The frame not found

As for the frame, an object dating from 1959 where we see Jean Béliveau taking a ceremonial throw in during the Tournament, it has still not been found.

The latter might very well be lost forever, according to the police force.

“We have no information that leads us to believe that the frame was sold. It is therefore either very well hidden…. Or destroyed. This second option is the most likely,” laments Mr. Poitras.

The SPVQ would still like to highlight the collaboration of the media and the population which made it possible to obtain a lot of information in this investigation.

Reactions

The arrest of a suspect in this case means that the investigation is progressing, according to Patrick Dom, general director of the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

“It’s a step forward. We know that this will advance the police investigation. Our fear from the beginning is that the framework has been destroyed. That’s what we think, but we don’t want it. We can’t wait to have news on that,” he added.

The fact that the frame bears the signature of Jean Béliveau adds to its value, according to him.
