Theft at Huy Recyparc: Solutions and Strategies to Prevent Container Theft

Simple and efficient. This Sunday or Monday, we do not yet know very well when, a team of thieves broke down the entrance gate of the Huy recyparc (it is located in Solières) using a ram truck. They then loaded a 38 m3 container onto the said truck before leaving the scene. “This is already the fourth time this has happened this year. And the fifth in two years,” explains Jean-Jacques De Paoli, spokesperson for Intradel. “Each time, the thieves proceed in the same way.”

New theft at the Solières recyparc: one of the 1,500 acts committed each year…

But what is new in this case is that the stolen container was… empty. “I really wonder regarding the destination of this flight,” continues the spokesperson for the intercommunale.

Even if it is unprecedented to see the theft of an empty container, the location of the theft is not surprising because the recyparc is well located. Which makes it an ideal destination. “It’s not very far from the highway. It’s easy for thieves, who can then head to Germany.” And doesn’t it help that the park is isolated? “It’s true that it is not subject to very great social control. But you shouldn’t believe, not a night goes by without one of our 49 recyparcs being the victim of theft or “deterioration. For example, we have just found a burnt container in Beyne.” Intradel services have also noticed that acts of theft and vandalism increase when the overall economic situation deteriorates.

But are there solutions to prevent such cases from multiplying? “At Huy, we have reached an agreement with the police zone. They will carry out more frequent patrols.” Note that the intermunicipal company is currently working on a geolocation system for its containers, which will make it possible to find them in the event of theft.

In 30 years, the recyparks of the province of Liège have become essential

And once the container is stolen, can we identify the criminals? “In the case of major thefts like this, it is very rare, because the thieves are very well organized. On the contrary, we find small-time thieves much more easily, because we see their faces or their license plate on surveillance cameras.”
