It has now been over a year since the latest generation of consoles from Microsoft has been available on the market. The Xbox Series X embeds hardware innovations and an extensive video game library, confirming its power compared to the competition. Result: it sells like hotcakes, even in Japan, where Nintendo and Sony dominate the market! Its notoriety is such that it managed to surpass sales of the Xbox One in just one year of existence.
Xbox Series X, the console of all records
Although the Xbox Series X/S has only been available in Japan for a little over a year, it has managed to break its big sister’s sales record. According to Famitsu’s sales report, 84,329 Xbox Series X units have been sold. As for the Xbox Series S, 68,449 units are sold, from its launch until the week of February 20, 2022.
This data proves that in Japan, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have been more successful than Xbox One. In one year, the latest generation of consoles from Microsoft surpassed the four years of sales of the Xbox One. It’s not over yet: Xbox Series X and Series S are on their way to breaking the original Xbox’s sales record.
Japan and gaming culture
The Xbox Series X has achieved a feat in terms of sales compared to the Xbox One. However, it is far from achieving the supremacy of its competitors in the Land of the Rising Sun. In Japan, Xbox is lagging far behind Nintendo Switch and PS5 sales. It’s obvious: Nintendo and Sony are the kings there.
The numbers speak for themselves. During the same week of February 20, 2022, the Nintendo Switch sold 23,862 units and the PS5 sold 23,249 units. This explains the wide gap between the three firms. Admittedly, Microsoft is beginning to establish itself in the Japanese region, but for now, Sony and Nintendo remain the undisputed leaders. Will Microsoft be able to change the game and tip the scales in its favor?
