This Sunday, union leaders and representatives of Hollywood studios reached a provisional agreement to end the historic screenwriters’ strike that has now been going on for almost five months without a resolution.
After the weekend negotiations, both organizations would be close to reaching a successful conclusion, although no agreement was reached with the unemployed actors (SAG-AFTRA).
Last Saturday, the film and television studios delivered their “best and last” offer to the strikers for review and subsequent agreement to conclude the strike that began on May 2. The work stoppage has lasted a total of 145 days.
Last night, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) released a statement regarding their agreement with the proposal they would be willing to accept. “We can say, with great pride, that this agreement is exceptional, with significant benefits and protections for writers in all member sectors,” they expressed in the writing and published on their official website.
The agreement for a three-year contract – reached following five days of marathon renewed negotiations between the WGA and an alliance of studios, streaming services and production companies – still needs to be approved by the union’s board of directors and its members before the strike can officially end.
“To be clear, no one should return to work until specifically authorized by the Guild. Until then we will continue on strike. But, starting today, we will suspend the WGA pickets,” they said, while inviting their members to accompany the actors union strike.
