The hidden enemies of our brain: foods to avoid to preserve our cognitive health
In a world where Alzheimer’s disease affects more and more people, particularly women, preserving brain health has become a priority. Lisa Mosconi, neurologist and director of the American Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, warns us regarding the devastating impact of a poor diet on our brain. According to her, harmful foods have a more harmful effect on our brain than the benefits provided by healthy foods. Thus, it is crucial to know which foods to avoid to maximize our cognitive health and prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
1. White foods
White foods, which we consume daily, are actually refined carbohydrates such as white sugar, white rice and white wheat flour. These refined carbohydrates, lacking their essential nutrients and fiber, are considered empty calories. They cause spikes in blood sugar levels that, in the long term, can damage brain cells and reduce brain volume, setting the stage for neurodegenerative diseases.
2. Foods high in trans fats
Trans fatty acids, especially those produced industrially, are particularly harmful to the brain. Although natural trans fats found in meat and dairy products are not as problematic, consuming them in excess can have a deleterious effect on our brain health.
3. Sweeteners
Used to replace sugar, sweeteners are ubiquitous in sodas, energy drinks and no-sugar-added products. Animal studies have shown that these sugar substitutes may have adverse effects on the brain.
4. Alcohol
If consumed in moderation, alcohol can be one of life’s pleasures. However, excessive consumption is devastating to the brain, altering metabolism, reducing brain volume and causing irreversible damage.
5. Ultra-processed foods
These foods, often rich in salt, sugar and fat, are among the most harmful to our physical and brain health. Their regular consumption can accelerate brain aging and promote neurodegenerative diseases.
6. Foods rich in EFAs
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are molecules formed by the reaction between a sugar and proteins. Produced when food is cooked, they are undesirable for the body and can accumulate in the brain.
To protect our brain, it is therefore essential to favor a healthy and balanced diet, rich in beneficial nutrients and low in processed and artificial foods. Together, let’s adopt healthy habits for a healthy life and successful aging.
