In a strange and rare case, a woman named Christy States went to see a doctor because of a very small red spot under her eye, only 0.65 mm in size, only to discover that she had skin cancer.

Almost invisible to the human eye, the small spot is melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer.

Doctors told Stats her malignant lump was the smallest skin cancer ever discovered and earned her a Guinness World Record.

Dr. Alexander Witkowski, an assistant professor of dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University who discovered the cancer, said the discovery means skin cancer can be treated before it spreads.

The team overseeing the case confirmed that the spot was melanoma, also called stage 0 melanoma.

Dr Witkowski said Mrs. States’ cancer was caught before it had a chance to spread to other parts of the body.

Ms. Stats expressed her gratitude for discovering the tumor early, and said: “I think it is possible for everyone to be as lucky as I am with the right technology.”

Melanoma represents only a small part of skin cancers in general, but it causes the vast majority of skin cancer deaths.
