“María Branyas has left us. She has left as she wanted: while she was sleeping, peacefully and without pain,” her family said in Catalan in a message on Branyas’ account on the social network X.
The Gerontology Research Group, which validates data on people believed to be 110 years old or older, named her as the oldest person in the world after the death of the French nun, Lucile Randonlast year.

Branyas was born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907. After living for some years in New Orleanswhere her father founded a magazine, the family returned to Spain when she was little. Branyas said she remembered crossing the Atlantic Ocean during World War I.
