The world’s fastest supercomputer has also come into action to defeat the new novel corona virus.
The global pandemic of the new virus poses an unprecedented challenge to scientists, and to beat the speed of its spread, it is necessary to advance the research process even faster and the world’s fastest. Supercomputer Summit is designed to do just that.
This IBM supercomputer is equipped with an artificial intelligence brain that can perform thousands of analyzes that can help determine which compounds can effectively stop viruses from infecting cells.
This supercomputer has identified 77 chemical compounds that can help in the development of the most effective vaccine.
Scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory published their findings in the journal ChemRxiv. Keep in mind that this computer was developed by the US Department of Defense in 2014 to solve major problems.
Its power is 200 petaflops and one betaflop means one thousand trillion operations in one second i.e. this supercomputer can do 2 lakh trillion calculations per second.
Previously, the computer has identified cellular systems that cause Alzheimer’s, analyzed genes that play a role in addictions such as opiate addiction, and predicted climate change.
Viruses infect host cells and the computer’s job is to find compounds that will stop the cells from spreading.
During the research, the scientists developed a model of the spike protein of the corona virus and tried to find out through the computer how this viral protein reacts to different compounds.
The supercomputer ran more than 8,000 simulations to see which compounds could inhibit the virus’s spike protein and identified 77.
Now the research team will repeat the process again in the computer, this time this month using a more authentic model of the spike protein of the coronavirus.
Once compounds are identified, they are tested experimentally to determine which chemicals work best.
The researchers said in a statement that our results do not mean that we have discovered a cure for the coronavirus, but these results will help in future research studies and make it easier to create a more effective vaccine.
