Frans Timmermans, President of the European Commission for Climate Affairs and Vice-President of the European Commission, warned on Friday that society will fight wars over food and water in the future if serious action is not taken on the issue of climate change.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Frans Timmermans said that global warming poses one of the greatest risks to security around the world, and urged that efforts to limit its impact not be derailed by other geopolitical crises, such as the war in Ukraine.
“Climate is security, it’s the same thing,” Timmermans said.
“The climate crisis will not stop because there is another priority,” he said, according to a report published by the American network “CNBC” and seen by “Al Arabiya.net.”
Timmermans said there is an “emerging” sense of urgency within society, which needs to harness industry and government in order to implement change.
“If we don’t do this, there is no doubt that my children and grandchildren will go to wars over water and food,” Timmermans said.
