The world wakes up on January 1st with the Vienna Philharmonic

For the 84th time, the Vienna Philharmonic will welcome awakening humanity around the globe with the New Year’s Concert on January 1st. And for the 66th time, the ORF is taking part to bring the sounds from the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association out into the world. Around 100 countries access the channel’s images created with 15 cameras. Nine compositions will be played for the first time as part of the New Year’s Concert under the direction of Christian Thielemann.

Among other things, the edited “Quadrille WAB 121”, a work by Anton Bruckner, will be heard for the first time as part of the New Year’s Concert. After all, the whole world, not least the Vienna Philharmonic, will be celebrating the big Bruckner anniversary next year on the composer’s 200th birthday on September 4th. And the traditional intermission film is also entirely dedicated to the annual anniversary. Under the title “A Journey of Discovery” directed by Felix Breisach, two choir boys from St. Florian Abbey go on a discovery tour to the central stations of the Upper Austrian’s life, including Ansfelden and Bad Ischl.

This year’s ballet interludes were also filmed in the Upper Austrian health resort of Bad Ischl – although less in honor of Bruckner than in view of this year’s Salzkammergut 2024 Capital of Culture year, in which Bad Ischl acts as an anchor city. And at Rosenburg in Lower Austria, choreographer Davide Bombana staged the dancers in costumes by Susanne Bisovsky.

January 1, 2024 will not only be Christian Thielemann’s second appearance at the New Year’s Concert after 2019, ORF culture lady Teresa Vogl will also be leading the morning for the second time. The event will begin at 10:35 a.m. with the documentary “Prelude to the New Year’s Concert” as a look behind the scenes. And if you can’t drag yourself out of bed for the actual concert at 11.15 a.m., ORF III will repeat the event in the evening at 8.15 p.m., while ORF 2 will do it again on January 6th at 10.05 a.m., before 3sat on the same day at 8.15 p.m Clock concludes the dance.
