His face, his voice and his talent have marked French theater and cinema for more than forty years. With several nominations for the Oscars and Molières, Jean-Pierre Darroussin is this year showing three films and a theatrical tour that will pass through Switzerland.
Jacques was his first role in the film Psythat of Dany in my best buddies made it known to the general public. Often too soft, too naive, too nice, the characters played by Jean-Pierre Darroussin are supporting roles most of the time, like that of the waiter who won him a César in 1997.
The actor is particularly prolific: he has to his credit a hundred films, fifteen plays, but also a successful film, Marguerite’s Theorem, premiered at Cannes. This time he embodies a rigid and old-fashioned maths teacher, but with humanity.
“He is a character who has bitterness, who has not been recognized for the talent he claims to have”, explains Jean-Pierre Darroussin. He plays a role that fits into a register different from those he is used to. “I want to go more on the side of naivety, perhaps even go as far as perversity. There are more troubled, more ambivalent characters that interest me.”
A favorite director
The closeness with the little people, he shares it with the director Robert Guédiguian. The former communist militant will make it one of his favorite actors. This year once more, Jean-Pierre Darroussin will be showing one of his films.
“We always had this idea of embodying a troupe, when it does not exist, film troupes. However, we created one and we manage to maintain it”, says the actor. “That we know each other so well allows us to know how we are going to collaborate. We are immediately confident in the work. It allows us to be much more available for each other.”
The industry always tends to grow and to want to engulf everything that is of the order of craftsmanship.
Cinema in danger
Jean-Pierre Darroussin defends a cinema that should not only entertain, but also warn and question. However, the cinema is in bad shape. In Switzerland, for example, admissions have increased from 120 million in 2019 to 50 million in 2021. For the actor, cinema – especially authorship – is in danger.
“Industry always tends to get bigger and wants to engulf everything that has to do with craftsmanship. Industry is only there to manufacture products, so things that reinforce people in what they already know,” laments the actor. “Cinema is also a prototype industry. We try to produce new things that we will try to taste, different things. It is therefore necessary to preserve this craft.”
