The World Health Organization warns of the danger of the spread of the deadly Marburg virus

The organization said in a statement: “As of September 29, 2024, a total of 26 confirmed cases have been reported, including eight deaths. Cases have been reported in seven of Rwanda’s 30 regions. The World Health Organization estimates that the risk of an outbreak of this disease is very high at the national level, high at the regional level, and low at the global level.”

The World Health Organization warns that there is a risk of the disease spreading to neighboring countries, with cases having been reported in areas bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda.

In addition, the risk of international spread is high as confirmed cases have been reported in the capital of this country which has an international airport and a road network with several cities in East Africa. It is known that one of the contacts traveled internationally to Belgium and appropriate response measures were taken.

It is noteworthy that there is currently no treatment or vaccine for the virus.

Marburg virus is transmitted to humans by fruit bats, and spreads between humans through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as surfaces and materials.

Symptoms include severe headaches, abdominal pain, and bleeding from the nose and mouth. Supportive therapy (oral or intravenous rehydration) is used to improve patient survival rates and treat symptoms only.
