Al Thumama Stadium Administration Director Khalifa Al Mana spoke regarding the stadium for the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy website on Monday, pointing to the location of the stadium and its importance in the principle of sustainability, especially for the residents of the area, especially as it is a large sports facility spread over a large area close to residential areas.
In his speech, Al-Manea said: “The area surrounding the stadium includes many sports facilities, including jogging and cycling tracks, amid vast green spaces, in addition to a number of training grounds to serve Qatari clubs following the World Cup competitions are over.”
Al Mana spoke regarding the design of the stadium, saying, “Al Thumama Stadium is distinguished by its unique design, which was inspired by the Qatari architect Ibrahim Al Jaidah from the white gahfiya, the traditional head covering for men in the Arab world.
In his speech, Al-Manea also explained that the area surrounding the stadium will include more diverse sports facilities, such as handball and basketball courts, swimming pools, multi-use halls, an indoor training hall and others.
Al-Manea said in his speech: “It is scheduled to dismantle 20,000 of the upper-tier seats of the stadium, which can accommodate regarding 40,000 fans, and donate them to sports projects in countries that lack sports infrastructure, and then take advantage of the stadium with its reduced capacity, to host football competitions. And other sporting events, in addition to the establishment of retail stores, a sports clinic, and a small hotel in the upper area of the stadium.”
It is noteworthy that the Al Thumama World Cup Stadium has been awarded the 5-star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certificate, awarded by the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), as the innovative design of the stadium takes into account all aspects of sustainability.
