Five years have passed and Jero Freixas and José de Cabo – known as ‘The World Cup Couple’ – are the sensation of social networks with the funny situations that a real couple lives through football and life. They come to our country to present their successful play, but before they confess their affection for Peru, they reveal which national club has already contacted them to visit their stadium and, of course, to talk about Lionel Messi.

Jero Freixas (JF): The Argentine with the Peruvian historically there is a lot of connection. In addition, after the Malvinas, the Argentine took a very strong love for the Peruvian. If you ask the Argentine in general to choose a country in South America; I think most will tell you Peru.
José de Cabo (JDC): There is a lot of migration from one side to the other. There is something very special between the two countries.

– What does your professional league and the presence of its ambassadors abroad mean for an Argentine?
JF: Argentine soccer is the one I like the most. We Argentines watch our championship a lot, we are very fond of our football. Obviously we are aware of the leagues in which the players of the national team participate, that is, we are aware of the Premier, the Spanish League, Serie A, before the French League, but now it is a bad word. However, we know the clubs in South America from the Libertadores and the Sudamericana.
– Speaking of a compatriot soccer player and Jero being a fan of Red, would you have preferred that Paolo Guerrero come to Independiente and not to Racing?
JF: Of course, it hurt a little, but that’s football and I enjoy watching it in the Argentine league.

Jose de Cabo: Yes, without a doubt. Also, I think neither of us would be here – professionally speaking – without the other. We push ourselves to follow our dreams, do what we are passionate about and be better. There is a good combination.

Jose de Cabo: At that time Jero had two jobs and doing the math – of course we were going to adjust – but with his theater school we could continue living without luxuries, but we were going to be fine. There was a backup, I don’t know what would have happened without it; but the most important thing is that he was happy with what he did.
JF: There was a reality and that is that I couldn’t stand my office job. I complained all the time, I arrived in a bad mood and José told me to quit, but I thought that he was not going to catch up with us until one day I had the impulse and did it.
– Being both actors, haven’t you thought about having roles as antagonists in movies, theater or television?
JF: It would be a lot of fun. I have often imagined it.
Jose de Cabo: The dynamics of the characters is somewhat antagonistic. They are clearly characters, but we are exaggerated. It would be fun to do something more alien to who we are and be antagonistic.
– What do you feel when you see that video you made together in 2018 and it went so viral?
JF: I think it worked out well for us. I don’t want to be too big, but it is one of the videos that has gone viral the most in the world, not only was it seen in countries on our continent, but it was also subtitled in China, Arabia, in English. It was tremendous madness. I see it and I feel proud, for having insisted on José with one more take and one more take. We recorded two hours in the car, editing it was chaos, but that’s how things turn out. I am grateful for the day that idea occurred to me, for having insisted, and also to José for his patience.
– Your play has reached Europe and a second performance had to be opened in Peru since the first one was sold out, how do you take it?
José de Cabo: We are happy. We tell the people who go that they are going to have a lot of fun, that they will feel identified and if they don’t sit down, they will still laugh. Many people tell us that they are without a partner, that they do not have children or do not like football and if they can go to the play, we answer that of course, it is a story, you will still laugh, even if you do not see yourself reflected. – Qatar must be one of the most special chapters of your lives because of everything you have experienced. Do you think it’s the highest peak you’ve reached as fans and for your work itself, or maybe you’re missing something more to achieve?
JF: As a fan of soccer and my national team, what I wanted most was to win the World Cup. That is already settled. Obviously I would like to see Independiente champion in the Libertadores, although we are the most winners, I did not experience it. I had difficult moments for Rojo, so I would like to experience times of glory for Independiente.
The truth is that as a fan, the first thing I wanted was for Argentina to win. I always say I am very independent, but if they give me a choice; I choose my selection. Many people who did not agree with me, today after living that union, the celebrations in the street; They realized what it was like to be a world champion and everything that the national team generated on the planet. That was what I aspired the most as a soccer fan and it was given to me.
– Jero, in recent months we have seen you more away from home due to your constant trips to live incredible experiences. How do you take everything you’ve had to live through lately and also the fact that footballers that you used to only see on TV now follow you and recognize your work?
JF: It’s a beautiful moment, especially that of the footballers. The trips are very nice, but very exhausting. It’s amazing to know so many countries and go to such important events that I like so much and also my fans.
Jose de Cabo: There is something about the trips – that is not so well known – and that is that we feel a bit like the representation of all normal people, who do not have the opportunity to go to those events. As in the World Cup, we felt like representatives of all those who had not been able to go. For us it is also nice to travel to places, events or situations, where we can take another look. It is the traveling fan and it is what makes us very proud and we like to be able to show it.
JF: People’s messages come from that point, because they thank us for showing that moment, without losing the fan, without losing that surprise. As in the case of the players, now they know me, follow me and say hello. That is very strong. It never ceases to amaze me. It’s a surprise and it’s as if it happened to anyone and Xavi, Iniesta or a big player comes up to him and says: ‘I like what you do’. This did not come as a gift, it cost us so much and that is why we live it with humility and our feet well placed on the ground.

Jero, if Lio Messi invites you to play his last game with him, but that same day Ricardo Darín asks you to act in his last play. Which one would you choose?
JF: How about question! I think I spend thirty minutes with Messi and then I run off with Darín. I talk to both of them, besides they are friends and they know each other. I talk to Ricardo and tell him to let me play half an hour with Lionel and he sure says yes or vice versa. We solve it that way. I can’t choose between those two big ones.
Jero, and if you could plan where and how your first meeting with Messi would be, what would you choose?
JF: Good question. He would look for a place where he feels comfortable, surrounded by his family. It would be a quiet place, because he is very simple. I would look for his place, his Rosario. He would do it in a place that Messi loves.
If you give me the choice of a football stadium to make walls with Lionel, hopefully it will be at Maxi’s (Rodríguez) farewell, because it is Ñuls, a place that has a lot of history, the place of which he is a fan, but it could also be the Camp Nou. Of course it would be incredible on the Independiente field, I would like to take it, because it would be very nice, it is my club and having it there would be spectacular and for all the Red people.

JF: Without a doubt, from that day until today. Still have to keep working. I love my job and I enjoy every day. I have many dreams to fulfill, many more people to make laugh, because it is an objective to bring joy to the home. I aspire to continue growing and living from what I love most in the world.
– And have you thought about writing the script for the movie of your life?
JF: Not yet. There is a lot to go. If all goes well, one day we may deserve to have our film, but we have to deserve it. That is merit, you have to keep working, keep leaving traces in people so that one day there will be interest in seeing the lives of these two actors who achieved what they did, and hopefully still achieve many more things.
– Jero, if you could go back in time and you meet the Jero who was going to record Country Man Chapter 1, what would you say?
JF: That day was my daughter Rita’s birthday. I appreciate saying I’m going to record now. All my family supported me, it was my cast. That day was fundamental in my story, because it was the day I made the decision, I had the momentum and I went out on the pitch.
