The prosecutor’s office charged a 31-year-old woman with murder and desecration of her child in the criminal case of the body of a newborn found in the village of Suure-Lähtru on February 5.
According to the senior prosecutor of the Western District Prosecutor’s Office, Eliisa Sommer, the data collected in the criminal proceedings indicate that the 31-year-old woman, being aware of her pregnancy, independently gave birth to a live and full-term boy.
“According to the indictment, after giving birth, a 31-year-old woman caused the newborn’s death by her own actions, when she tore the umbilical cord from the placenta and closed the child’s airspace. In addition, according to the indictment, the 31-year-old woman inflicted superficial skin injuries on the child’s head, body, legs and hands,” said Sommer.
“The prosecution accuses a 31-year-old woman of desecration of a corpse, which, according to the accusation, consisted in the fact that she did not bury the newborn’s body according to generally accepted customs, but took the naked body to the field, where it was found on the morning of February 5 by a dog from the household of the same village,” said Sommer. He added that the evidence established during the pre-trial proceedings indicates that the woman did not inform anyone about the child’s death.
The pre-trial proceedings were conducted by the Western Prefecture.
On February 5, a dog brought a dead newborn to a person’s yard in the village of Suure-Lähtru. The police immediately started a large-scale search, the child’s mother was identified and found in March in Morocco. On March 9, a suspected woman was detained in the city of Laâyoune in the Dakhla region of Morocco after Estonia had declared her internationally wanted. Since then, she has been in custody in prison.
