The WHO will have the highest budget in its history

The Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) have agreed on Monday the budget for the next two years (2024-2025), which amounts to 6,830 million dollars (6,330 million euros), the highest in history , and that includes an increase of 20 percent of the contribution of the countries to the health organization.

In the framework of the 76th World Health Assembly, which is being held in Geneva (Switzerland), the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has thanked the member states for their “overwhelming and firm” support for the budget, as well as as the “trust placed” in the WHO.

The WHO budget: the details

The objectives of the budget for the next two years of the WHO are, firstly, to ensure that one billion more people benefit from universal health coverage (1,823.36 million euros); one billion more people better protected from health emergencies (1,125.69 million); and one billion more people enjoying better health and well-being (405.86 million).

Likewise, 1,251.80 million euros will be allocated to achieve “more effective and efficient support from the WHO to the countries.” These three items represent a total of 4,606.80 million euros for the basic programs of the WHO, which remains unchanged with respect to the 2022-2023 budget.

In addition, the budget includes measures for the eradication of polio (643.79 million euros), special programs (159.21 million) for a total of 803 million. 927.26 million will also be allocated for emergency operations and appeals.

With the increase in quotas, the Member States will contribute to this budget with 1,064.77 million euros. The rest, 5,272.20 million euros, will be covered by voluntary contributions from Member States and other partners. According to the WHO, investing in their budgets reports 32.45 euros for every euro invested.

The 20 percent increase in country contributions was a commitment agreed by the Health Assembly last year, and one of the recommendations made by the WHO Working Group on Sustainable Financing. Other recommendations related to sustainable financing for WHO, including accountability, governance and financing reforms, will continue to be considered this week.
