President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been monitoring the Iranian attack on Israel from the White House Situation Room and receiving regular updates from their national security team, officials said Tuesday.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it struck important military targets with dozens of missiles in the occupied Palestinian territories in response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hassan Nasrallah, and Major General Abbas Nilforoushan.
He stressed that if Israel responds to the attack, it will face violent attacks.
Before the strike began, Biden confirmed that the United States was ready to help Israel defend against the Iranian missile attack.
He also reported that Washington is ready to protect American personnel in the region.
Before the missile attack began, the Pentagon said that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant to discuss the threat of an Iranian attack against Israel.
A ministry spokesman said they spoke of dire consequences “if Iran chooses to launch a direct military attack against Israel.”
One of the first reactions from a member of Congress was Republican Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, who described the Iranian missile attack on Israel as a “turning point” and called for a response.
“I would urge the Biden administration to coordinate an overwhelming response with Israel, starting with Iran’s ability to refine oil,” Graham said in a statement, and called for “hitting oil refineries hard.”
