The event was significant, and Bordeaux realized it on Monday July 31: hundreds of fans had gathered under the balconies of the Grand Hôtel Intercontinental, from which Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – alias The Weeknd – gratified them with a princely greeting. Monday followingnoon, it was a column of black vehicles which, like a diplomatic convoy, split a crowd of the same ilk. To drive the Canadian star to the Matmut Atlantique Stadium where some 42,000 spectators awaited his great R’n’B mass. A light show, to close the concert season at the Girondins stadium, this Tuesday, August 1.

Science-fiction pop

The world is a stage and the stage is a city: an imposing “skyline” of iconic buildings of the industrial age, in steel and in ruins. In front of this XXL decor, a gigantic steel statue sparkles, depicting a naked woman, rearing up as if to take flight.

The Weeknd, mysterious mask and white outfit of an adventurous archangel, dances and sings, under an immense balloon moon, pinned to the sky of the stadium.

At the feet of this pop science-fiction divinity, The Weeknd, mysterious mask and white outfit of an adventurous archangel, dances and sings, under an immense balloon moon, pinned to the sky of the stadium. A procession of 28 dancers veiled in white follow the metronomic choreographies, in an atmosphere of somewhat abstruse mysticism, between “Dune” and vintage disco…

Flashing wristbands

The solemnity of the decorum sometimes contrasts with the hedonism of the songs. The hits tumble early (“Take My Breath”, “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Hurricane” borrowed from Kanye West). Powerful and bursting with autotune, the voice impresses, and prances in the treble, supported by strong beats, old-fashioned synths, the hammering of a drummer-puncher and borderline hard rock guitar.

In the audience, where The Weeknd – who has dropped the mask – ventures to make “I Feel it Coming” sing, the bracelets given to the spectators flash in rhythm, contributing to the excessiveness of the light show.

The Matmut stadium was sold out, the 42,000 tickets were sold as soon as the ticket office opened in early December 2022.

The mood is a moment darker (impressive “Die for You” and “Call Out My Name”) and each time hits the mark. Two hours of concert, intense, with a cover of France Gall (“Laisse chute les filles”), as a gift for the last French concert of a triumphant world tour.
