The foreign ministers of Turkey and Egypt, Hakan Fidan and Sameh Shoukry met in Istanbul, with the war in Gaza and the attacks between Israel and Iran as the main subject of the agenda.
In an interview they gave together following their meeting, Turkish Minister Hakan Fidan stressed, among other things, that the cooperation between Egypt and Turkey is not only for the benefit of the two countries but also for the benefit of the peoples and our region.
He also stated that “Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Territories and the West’s unconditional support for it is one of the main reasons for the problem of instability in the Middle East.”
The Turkish foreign minister claimed that the war in Gaza activated the “tectonic rifts” between oppressed and oppressors on a global scale and expressed the view that this is the starting point of a showdown aimed at overthrowing what he said was an unjust system of global hegemony.
If the Palestinian issue is not addressed, tensions in the region will continue to escalate, Fidan said, noting: “If this crisis is not resolved properly, if the Palestinians are not given the statehood, independence and sovereignty they deserve, such crises will continue to escalate in our region”.
The other countries, he said, “shouldn’t be complacent in luxury thinking that ‘these things only happen in the Middle East, they won’t affect us'”, as he argued the crisis will also knock on their own door.
He reiterated that our first priority should be ending the Israeli occupation and implementing the two-state solution.
Hakan Fidan said, at the same time, that he discussed with his Egyptian counterpart the situation in Libya and “how we can jointly contribute to the integrity and stability” of the country.
For his part, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, emphasized that “the Palestinians have suffered a great loss, the international community is watching in amazement and a ceasefire must be implemented in Gaza as soon as possible.”
Egypt, he said, would continue its efforts to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, expressing concern regarding escalation at this time. “There is a possibility that this tension will spread,” he said characteristically.
Referring to the attacks between Israel and Iran, he argued that “recent events have distracted the attention of the international community from the tragic conditions in Gaza.”
The two ministers avoided giving a clear answer when asked when the months-announced visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Turkey will take place. Sameh Shukri just wished that this visit would take place very soon.
Finally, the delegations of the two sides also collaborated on the preparation of the next Egypt-Turkey High Level Cooperation Council and discussed ways to increase the volume of trade between them, from the current $8 billion to the $15 billion target which the presidents of the two countries put together at their meeting on February 12 in Cairo.
