The war between Moscow and Kiev must be stopped to avoid a nuclear catastrophe

With the escalation of international fears regarding the borders that might reach the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which has entered its eighth month, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stressed the need to stop “the war between the two sides in order to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.”

He also added, in a speech delivered today, Monday, at the 66th session of the Agency’s General Conference, that the United Nations organization is ready to consult with Moscow and Kiev in order to stabilize the surrounding area. Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

In addition, he stressed that the agency will do everything in its power to avoid a nuclear disaster in Ukraine.

The largest facility in Europe

It is noteworthy that the International Atomic Energy Agency, which visited the Zaporizhia complex earlier this month, had repeatedly warned of the seriousness of the situation, especially in light of the continued mutual bombing between the Ukrainian and Russian sides.

It also called for the establishment of a “security zone”, to avoid any dire consequences of a nuclear accident.

For months, Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of bombing the plant, which is the largest nuclear power facility in Europe as a whole, and which, since early March, has been under the control of Russian forces.

This complex is an important source of Ukraine’s electricity supply. The plant, which is located on the southern bank of a huge reservoir on the Dnipro River, which separates Russian and Ukrainian forces, provides the country with more than 20% of its electricity needs.
