The war between Hamas and IsraeldossierThe Israeli strike this Saturday, January 10 on a village south of Beirut hit a car and reportedly killed two civilians. The man targeted would be “responsible for recruitment in the West Bank” within the Islamist movement.

The strike occurred this Saturday, February 10 on the village of Jadra, south of Beirut. It missed its target, a Hamas official, according to a Palestinian security source. A Lebanese security source indicated that the targeted official is named Bassel Saleh, and that he is “responsible for recruitment in the West Bank” within Hamas. “He escaped the assassination attempt but suffered burns on his back and was hospitalized,” added the same source.

If the man escaped the Israeli raid which targeted him in Lebanon, rescuers did however identify two civilians killed. The National Information Agency (ANI, official Lebanese) indicates that an “enemy drone targeted a car” in Jadra and caused “victims”.

The attack hit a car and reportedly cost the lives of a Lebanese vegetable seller and a Syrian who was riding a motorcycle. The site of the strike is located about forty kilometers from the Israeli-Lebanese border, where violence is concentrated between Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Palestinian Hamas, and the Israeli army.

This is a “failed attempt to assassinate a senior official” of Hamas, confirms a Palestinian security source. However, it is not known whether the target was in the car at the time of the attack.

Hamas number 2 killed in early January

It is the second time since the start of the Gaza war four months ago that strikes attributed to Israel have targeted areas outside southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah is well established.

Since the day after the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, which sparked the war in Gaza, Hezbollah has been bombing Israeli military positions on the border, in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement. On January 2, Hamas number 2, Saleh al-Arouri, was killed in a drone strike blamed on Israel on the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Update: addition at 4:30 p.m. of the identity of the Hamas official targeted by the attack.
