The War Between Hamas and Israel: Controversial Song and Video Spark Outrage

The war between Hamas and IsraeldossierProduced by a movement supporting the Israeli army, the song was broadcast by public television, which then deleted its publications.

Question asked by François on November 20, 2023.

Of the tens of thousands of shares, and almost as many indignant comments. A video published and taken up by numerous pro-Palestinian accounts on Instagram and on military strikes or ruined buildings. “Look, the Israel Defense Forces are crossing the line to wipe out the swastika bearers,” the children also sing.

This three-minute sequence was translated into English and broadcast by a pro-Palestinian group, “The Electronic Intifada”, co-founded by American-Palestinian activist Ali Abunimah, who has repeatedly compared the State of Israel to Nazi Germany . The organization denounces “genocidal” words, citing in particular a passage: “We will annihilate everyone”.

It is difficult to know whether this passage (whose exact translation, from Hebrew, would rather be “We will slaughter them all”) refers to all the inhabitants of Gaza, as interpreted by “The Electronic Intifada”, or whether it targets only the “swastika wearers”, mentioned a little earlier in the song. Which might be a reference to Hamas and its members, so described, and not to all Gazans.

Diverted cover of a poem

The song is ambiguous on another point. In the preceding sentence, she announces that “within a year, there will be nothing left” in Gaza. Adding: “And we can return home safely.” This last sentence may refer to Israelis who had to leave localities in the south of the country following the Hamas attack on October 7, and who might return home once the threat is lifted. But the accompanying image, showing soldiers waving an Israeli flag in the Gaza Strip, may also suggest that the authors of the song are in favor of an occupation of this territory.

There is no doubt, however, that the words call for the total destruction of Gaza.

This song is a twisted cover of a poem and song, Hareut (“Friendship”), as explained by the American and pro-Israeli weekly Jewish Press. Written following the 1948 war by Haim Gouri, a close friend of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, this very popular text pays tribute to his compatriots who died for the founding of the State of Israel. It does not contain any bellicose remarks, unlike the 2023 video.

Behind this new version of the song, performed by children from areas near Gaza, and who have been evacuated since the massacres of October 7, we find Ofer Rosenbaum. This communicator was already at the origin of a controversial poster campaign, depicting Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah leaders tied up and kneeling at the feet of IDF soldiers. Recently invited on a television set, he also considered that Israel should not be concerned regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza: “From the moment the other side stopped treating us like humans […]our duty is to fight them as if they were not humans.”

A movement of unconditional support for the army

Ofer Rosenbaum is the founder of the “Civic Front” movement, who created the song and video. This organization, which campaigns mainly through the creation of online content, aims to “restore the confidence of Israelis in their security system”, and to ensure that “[Tsahal] can act freely during the Gaza war. “The objectives of this war, its duration and its methods of operation [doivent] be subordinated solely to the security and political needs of the State of Israel, without taking into consideration foreign factors,” believes this movement, which calls itself “apolitical.” He declares on his site that “Hamas is a Nazi movement” and that as such, “it must be subject”, just like its accomplices, to “the laws which made it possible to bring the Nazis to justice”.

Asked by CheckNews regarding the purpose of the video as well as the lyrics of the song, the movement has not yet responded to our request.

After its publication by “Front Civique”, the controversial video of this children’s song was then taken up by several media, such as the i24News news channel or Jewish Pressbut also by Israeli public television, in a tweet and an article on his website Kan News. These have since been deleted. When contacted, neither Kan News nor its journalist responded to our request.
