The renowned writer, politician with a long history and lawyer Carlos Mateo Balmelli, born in Asunción, will present this Thursday, May 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Tulio Halperin Donghi room on the occasion of the 47th INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR of Buenos Aires, his last great novel ¨EL WALK OF THE WOLF¨.
Dramatic and dazzling novel that tries to unravel how within the heart of the same person, in this case WOLFGANG, whose name means “THE WOLF WOLF”, a former Nazi hierarch, feelings of cruelty and love can coexist at the same time. A man who belongs to that generation between the wars that grew up in a country in economic and social crisis and with the resentment that the leonine treaty of Versailles aroused in contemporaries.
As the pages of the work progress, the disturbing suspicion arises that it is a kind of justification and vindication of German thought and action, nothing further from what this work poses.
Most of the text consists of a kind of diary of the character, a convinced Nazi who does not outline the slightest regret or self-criticism.
Mateo Balmelli, like every writer, knew that placing the “bad guy” as the protagonist would imply complicating the task and taking risks, since the reader always tends to empathize with the main character and since he is the villain, there will necessarily be a clash of ideas in the thought of the reader.
The literary merit lies in achieving a character who is truthful, not repentant, because that would be entering into the old logic of “I didn’t know” and in Germany many people knew what was being done.
The Nazis had decreed the death of conscience, things like loving your neighbor as yourself, respect for life was just an invention of the Jews who contradicted instinctive human nature, man being man’s wolf. You only have to listen to the agonizing groan of the victim but also the arrogant and unpunished voice of the executioner.
THE WOLF WALK is a novel that invites you to have the courage to explore in the heart, the mind, the thought of these men in order to have a unified vision of that human anthropology stirring in the darkness of those hearts.
Historical reason absolves the old wolf of all moral judgment until the day when, already in the autumn of his life, he succumbs to the dictates of Love, a feeling that, until then for Wolfgang, served no cause. The same emotion that for the first time makes him reflect on the importance of the life of the other, of the loved one.
A literary work that dazzles with a great reflection on violence, evil and love that we all instinctively carry within our being.
