For people living in a landlocked country like Austria, it is often difficult to imagine that around 90 percent of goods traded worldwide are transported via waterways. Large container ships can transport more than 20,000 standard containers – if these were loaded onto trucks and lined up next to each other, the column would stretch from Vienna to Linz. A large part of world trade on the seas takes place on a few waterways. Almost every ship passes through the Suez and Panama Canals as well as the Straits of Gibraltar, Hormuz or Malacca on its route.
