In these minutes, the employees of the “Oberösterreichischen Volksblatt” are being informed by managing director Wolfgang Eder regarding drastic measures. The newspaper owned by the Upper Austrian People’s Party, which was first printed on January 2nd, 1869, will appear as a print newspaper for the last time on December 30th. After that, Medium will continue to operate exclusively online. As we learned, “a magazine” will also appear as a print product almost once a month. The OÖNachrichten learned this from informal circles; an official confirmation from the ÖVP is still pending.
This measure is justified by “increased competition, changing readership, increased costs and declining revenue”. The employees are also massively affected by this fundamental restructuring. Of the 46 editors, 30 are expected to lose their jobs. They want to look for individual solutions with the affected employees in individual discussions.
The measures now taken are strongly reminiscent of the approach taken by the political parties with the Wiener Zeitung. The oldest daily newspaper in the world (founded in 1703) was discontinued as a printed newspaper on June 30th and has since been continued as an online medium by a small team
