The period of “La Voix” duels, which began this Sunday, is a difficult phase for the coaches. On the one hand, they must pair equal talents around a song that will allow everyone to shine on stage, but then they must choose only one to continue the adventure.

A decision that the “saved” button allows them to avoid.
By opposing Philippe Plourde and Steven Grondin on the song “Father and son”, by Cat Stevens, Marjo had no idea of the tough choice she was going to have to make at the end of their performance.
The two singers approached this stage with camaraderie. “We saw it as a duo, said Philippe. We wanted to present an interpretation that complemented each other well with what was different from each other. We wanted to do a coherent number, and we delivered performances on an equal footing. They were able to take advantage of this song that the production tried to have several times in the past, without succeeding in obtaining the rights.
Steven also saw a parallel between the song’s lyrics and his own life. “It’s like a discussion between a father and his son. I made my “come out” this year and I went to find meaning thanks to my personal history. On the piano and the harmonica, they found the ideal formula, all gently and in depth for this duel.
A difficult choice
The two young men are happy to have been able to work with Marjo. “Her comments were super good, she is in total support and confidence,” said Philippe, while Steven insists on his presence at all times. “She gave us really relevant advice. We worked a lot on the staging, she wanted us to appropriate the song and make the stage our territory.
The other coaches voted two to one for Philippe, Marjo took the opportunity to tell him that she was convinced that he had a career assured in the manner of Jean-Pierre Ferland, it is moreover him that she chose to continue the adventure.
“I was very proud, but at the same time a little disappointed for Steven, he analyzed. Things are linked quickly on the stage.
But our national rocker finally mightn’t bring herself to let Steven go and decided to steal him, before getting up to go kiss him. “You’re too good, I just can’t let you go,” she whispered in his ear.
Sophie Grenier, 17 ans, Ottawa
Mario Pelchat lined up the two best voices of his team for this first show of duels, opposing the impressive Steffy Beyond and the breathtaking Sophie Grenier, whose blind audition caused a sensation. “It was stressful for me,” said the 17-year-old singer. It was hard to think that at the end of our duet, one of the two was going to have to leave, there were a lot of shared feelings. Choosing the song, “Et bam”, was not easy for her at first. “At first, I didn’t know her at all, but the more I listened to her, the more she touched me. At the same time, the story was regarding what we were going through, and it was written for Mentissa when she moved to “The Voice”. The two women have found a way to touch the hearts of the public. The coach first chose to keep Steffy in his team, but he immediately wanted to steal Sophie, just like Marc who tried to recover this magnificent talent. “I chose to stay with Mario, I feel like I can learn even more from him. Since the coaches have the possibility of saving only one person from their team, I found it touching that he wanted to save me and continue with him.
Élysabeth Rivest, 33, Saint-Thomas
Élysabeth Rivest suspected being paired with Marie-France Lantin for the duels because of their common style, especially on “I’m Every Woman”, by Chaka Khan. “It’s a song that makes me feel good, that makes me happy. It’s a party song with us. The song may be taken lightly, but the text also promotes the power of strong women. With Marie-France, we enjoyed working together so much, we especially wanted to have fun.” The 33-year-old singer says she has already learned a lot with her coach Corneille. “We learn to see the man behind the artist. He’s benevolent, and as charming as on TV. He believes in us and shows it to us, it gives us confidence. At the end of the service, she still felt a certain excitement when she saw that the three coaches leaned in favor of Marie-France. “I was almost preparing my farewell speech when I heard Corneille say my name. I was really very surprised. I think he saw something in me for the future.” She was later very happy to see that two coaches wanted to steal her competitor. Marie-France will continue the show in Mario Pelchat’s team.
Audrey-Anne Séguin, 27, Montreal
Marc Dupré chose to oppose two very different candidates, the strong emotional voice of Audrey-Anne Séguin once morest the scratchy rock of Nickolas Verrecchia on the song “Beggin'”. A winning formula if we judge the result. “I wanted to do the best number possible and to work in collaboration with Nickolas, indicated the singer. We each have our colors and our variations, but we quickly agreed on the fact that we were going to remain positive and benevolent towards each other. The coach said he liked his two candidates, but he chose to continue with Audrey-Anne for “the solidity and for the impression that she can sing anything”.
