The Vital Role of the Thymus Gland in Protecting Against Cancer: Why You Shouldn’t Remove It

Scientists found that an organ would be vital to protect the body once morest cancer, but people tend to remove it without knowing the benefits it has.

Although removal of the thymus is common, its role in immunity and adult health remains unclear. That is why the report Consequences for the health of the elimination of the thymus in adults revealed the benefits that this organ offers in favor of preserving immunity once morest carcinogenic agents.

Generally, a large part of the world’s population removes the thymus, which is a small gland located in the breastbone. The people who do it consider that it is an unnecessary organ for the functioning of the organism, but the scientists found that, on the contrary, it plays a fundamental role in preventing cancer.

By comparing information from patients who had their thymus removed with that of those who kept this gland, they have discovered interesting patterns. For example, patients who had a thymectomy (gland removal) had a higher risk of mortality from various causes later in life. Similarly, the probability of developing cancer was increased.

“The magnitude of the risk was something we never would have expected,” said David Adden, Gerald Professor of Medicine, and Darlene Jordan, professor in the Department of Stem Cells and Regenerative Biology. He exercised the role of director in the studio.

The thymus is considered an evolutionary accident, because it is believed that, with the advent of evolution, this gland was the area where cells accumulated. However, from science they found no reason for it and that is why people consider that it is really a useless organ.

In addition, certain surgical procedures linked to the heart and/or blood vessels require removal of the gland in order to have better visibility of the sector.

Even so, early removal of this gland results in a long-term decline in T cells in patients.

To study in depth the true importance of the thymus, the research body studied 1,146 patients who underwent thymectomy and cardiothoracic surgery without removal of the thymus.

The recommendation of the experts is not to remove that organ, because it would be omitting a fundamental part of the organism.

“Taken together, these findings support a role for the thymus in the production of new T cells in adulthood and in the maintenance of human health,” the authors note.

“The disruption of homeostasis caused by thymectomy is sufficient to adversely affect critical health outcomes, making a strong argument that the adult thymus remains functionally important,” they argue.
