Since the start of the pandemic in Quebec, children aged 0 to 9 represent 9.3% of the number of detected cases of COVID-19.
The hospitalization rate in this age group is only 1.6% and deaths are extremely rare, even non-existent or almost non-existent. The mortality would be only two cases per million.
Last December, a baby less than two months old died at the CHU Sainte-Justine, in Montreal, following contracting COVID-19.
Very rare
In September 2021, in Saint-Jérôme, a 27-year-old father also died of COVID-19.
According to a December 2021 working document from the CHU Sainte-Justine, the population of children aged 12 to 18 is marginal in studies and no case reports concern children under the age of 12.
As of November 29 in Quebec, the INSPQ indicated that there were no deaths among 0-9 year olds.
However, the Institute does not release numbers below 5, in order to avoid identifying deceased persons.
