Vienna (OTS) – After two years of Corona cancellations or postponements, this year it’s back to the usual spring date: The Vienna City Marathon 2022 will take place for the first time on Sunday, April 24, 2022 as the “Grand Prix of Austria” – an expression of the Austria-wide importance of the Event. The race can be seen live on ORF 1 from 8.30 a.m. ORF SPORT + will broadcast the press conferences for the Vienna City Marathon 2022 live on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22, where international and Austrian elite runners will be presented. ORF 1 reports live on the Sunday of the marathon from 8.30 a.m. The ORF regional studio in Vienna, ORF.at and TELETEXT are once once more making the VCM a major multimedia event. The Ö3 traffic editors provide a precise overview of the roadblocks and the situation on the alternative routes.
A field of high-class athletes want to attack the course records in good conditions. The two Austrian runners Lemawork Ketema and Timon Theuer are also at the start. For them, it’s regarding completing the EM limit of 2:14:30 hours.
Both of last year’s winners, Leonard Langat and Vibian Chepkirui from Kenya, return to defend their titles. Three runners with best times under 2:06 hours and five runners with best times under 2:25 hours are on the current start list. In this density it is the strongest elite field in the history of the event. Goitom Kifle from Eritrea with a best time of 2:05:28 hours, his compatriot Oqbe Kibrom with 2:05:53 and Abdi Fufa from Ethiopia with 2:05:57 lead the entry list.
Last year’s winner Vibian Chepkirui from Kenya is fifth in the women’s entry list with her best time of 2:24:29 hours in Vienna. This is led by Kenyan Caroline Kilel, whose top mark of 2:22:34 dates back to 2013, but who once more showed a good performance last December in Malaga with 2:26:32.
Starting at 8.30 a.m., the ORF team around presenter Oliver Polzer will be reporting on ORF 1 from the start at the IZD Tower on the UNO City site and from the finish area in front of the Burgtheater. After the live broadcast from 8.55 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. (commentator is Dietmar Wolff, co-commentator is two-time Olympic marathon starter Michael Buchleitner), ORF 1 will present the highlights of the “Inclusion Run” on April 23 at 12.30 p.m. From 12.30 p.m., OSP will show the finishes of the amateur runners live.
Johannes Hahn and Karoline Rath-Zobernig are on the road as motorcycle reporters to give immediate impressions of the route, the top field, the best Austrians, etc. A sophisticated radio technology system zooms the spectators right into the action: A total of 20 cameras (directed by Werner Mitterer, responsible editor Mathias Haiden) capture every detail of the race in high definition – three motorcycle cameras, a helicopter camera, a crane camera on a car in the leading group , a super slow motion camera at the start and another super slow motion camera in the finish area ensure that not a millisecond of the race is missed. Last but not least, a sophisticated satellite transmission with three cameras at the start, a camera at the end of the Reichsbrücke and a camera at the Prater allow close-up live reporting.

“Vienna Today” shows the final preparations for the Vienna City Marathon. From Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. on ORF 2, “Vienna Today” will be presenting background reports, analyzes and comprehensive coverage of the major sporting event. “Vienna Today” also accompanies a professional and a marathon beginner during their final training preparations. On Friday, April 22, the news magazine will deal with the question “Why are we running once morest time?” and will give viewers a sporting preview of the VCM. On Saturday, April 23, “Vienna Today” will provide an overview of the first “preliminary” runs such as the children’s run and the 10 km run.
