The Trail de la Vanne des Moines is cancelled. It was to be held this weekend in the Semois valley, but for lack of participants, “we had no other choice“, regrets Mathieu Galerin, one of the linchpins of the organization. A few days before the start, they were only 90 to have registered. “It’s not enough. During the first edition, we were 600. I don’t think there is a lack of interest in trail running. On the other hand, the covid has been there. We notice that we consume sport as we go to the supermarket. We take what we want, when we want and often at the last minute. For small infrastructures like ours, this is untenable.“
This observation is generalized on the small tests. “I have feedback from other organizations and the finding is that more and more registrations are made during the last three days before the event. On the big day, things are going pretty well too. But our organization cannot bet on these runners who will decide if the weather is favorable, for example.“
On their networks, the organization says: “When you like small artisanal trails, often pearls with hidden trails, organized by locals out of passion not profit, try to register in advance… It changes everything for the organizers. If you like the trail, also save the small structures.“
Today, the Vanne des Moines Trail is coming to a halt. “And we don’t know if we will have the resources to revive one. In any case, that is my ambition. There will be new infrastructure. Maybe that will make the different runners want to come and join us. Then We will review our communication and question ourselves.“
