IN the 2024 Joint Session of the DPR and DPD, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, delivered an important message about the need to prioritize national values in political struggles.
Puan emphasized that politics should not be carried out for personal or group interests, but for the interests of the nation and state as a whole.
In her speech which took place at the Nusantara Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (16/8), Puan highlighted the essence of true democracy.
He stated that democracy is a tool to give legitimacy to power, so that this power can be used to regulate the country for the welfare of the people.
However, he also reminded that democracy could go astray if it was not used in accordance with the principle of popular sovereignty.

Puan emphasized that the Indonesian Constitution has stipulated that sovereignty lies in the hands of the people, and that Indonesia is a country of law that upholds equality before the law.
Principle checks and balances between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of power is also regulated in the constitution to ensure that state power is not misused.
“Politics carried out without national values will only lead to political struggles centered on personal or group interests,” said Puan.

According to him, correct politics is politics that is carried out by upholding the values of wisdom, manners and ethics.
Puan also reminded us of the democratic principles once conveyed by the nation’s founder, Sukarno, that Indonesian democracy must be able to bring social welfare to all the people.
He emphasized that Indonesia was not founded for one person or one group, but for all the people.

At the end of her speech, Puan said that a true statesman would think about the future of the nation, while politicians only think about election results.
For this reason, a balance is needed between vision and power, so that state power can be used for the greater good.
The DPR-DPD Joint Session was attended by President Joko Widodo, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, ministers of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet, and leaders of state institutions. Several former presidents and vice presidents were also present as invited guests. (RO/Z-10)
