The Valuable Contributions of Employees with Intellectual Disabilities in the Workplace

Like every first day of the month, the program “À vos affaires” is making a turn to look at the challenges and injustices in the world of work.

On this May 1st, the minimum wage increases by one dollar, but living with a salary of $15.25 in 2023 is not easy.

What’s more, a sample of the working population often does not have the same chance of working full time, despite the shortage of labor and inflation: people with intellectual disabilities.

They can, however, offer valuable services. This is the case of Raymond, whom Pierre-Olivier Zappa was able to follow for a day in his routine at Les Compagnons de Montréal, where he works three days a week.

YOUR BUSINESS

“It gets me out of the house. Rather than staying at home doing nothing, I’m getting used to working.”

The coordinator of Compagnons de Montréal affirms that Raymond and other employees with intellectual disabilities are reliable, hardworking and their contribution is invaluable.

“It makes a big difference. We can count on them, because they are always present, explains Patricia Burelle. They are able to take on tasks and they work hard.”

She is full of praise for Raymond: “He doesn’t have a minute to lose!”

Patricia Burelle’s employees are hard at work. So much so that she has to remind them that their shift is coming to an end.

“They like to stay here. Sometimes they would like to stay even longer!”, she says, laughing.

Financially, Raymond is paid bi-weekly by the recruiting program. Proud employee, he does not spend a penny on futile goods.

“I try not to waste too much money,” he says. I spoil myself and leave some in the bank. When I need it, I take it.”

The experience gained in the kitchen will allow them to work elsewhere when the opportunity arises.

Often the main challenge for bosses is training. For example, Raymond was making curry and coconut meatballs when “A vos affaires” followed him to work. Before starting their employment at the Compagnons de Montréal, some of the team had never learned to do culinary tasks.

“The biggest challenge is that they can go work elsewhere,” says Patricia Burelle.

For Raymond, he and his colleagues have nothing to envy anyone. It sends a beautiful message of hope to people who want to earn money.

“Anyone can work, he insists. We are all capable.”
