The USS Ronald Reagan visit sparks tensions in Korean Peninsula: A looming nuclear war threat

Pyongyang on Friday condemned the visit to a South Korean port of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, saying that Washington had thus reached the “most advanced stage” of its plan for nuclear war, the official agency reported KCNA.

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier arrived at the southern port of Busan after South Korea and Japan conducted two days of joint naval exercises earlier this week.

The North Korean state agency called the exercises, which simulated the interception of North Korean ships used for smuggling goods, a “blatant military provocation.”

“The US plan for a nuclear attack against the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, editor’s note) and its implementation have reached the most advanced stage,” commented KCNA. “The outcome for the Korean Peninsula is absolutely clear.”

These latest naval maneuvers between Japan and South Korea come following joint exercises between Washington and Seoul conducted for 11 days in August.

Pyongyang had described these annual military exercises as “confrontation hysteria”.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced that more training would take place next week.
