The US will respect that Petro wants to reestablish relations with Venezuela

One of the points that coffee growers are most interested in is reaching an agreement for Monomers.

The US will respect the decision of Colombia’s elected president, the leftist Gustavo Petro, to reestablish relations with Venezuela, said the country’s ambassador in Bogotá.

After taking office on August 7, Petro announced that he will reactivate diplomatic and commercial channels with Nicolás Maduro, broken since 2019.

Neither the United States nor the outgoing administration of Iván Duque recognize the Chavista leader, considering that his re-election was fraudulent.

Even so, “we respect the sovereign decisions of any country (…) to deal with the situation in Venezuela,” said the representative in charge of the White House, Francisco Palmieri.

“We are going to see what decisions the new government will have, but it is their decision and we will do everything possible to maintain the good relationship with Colombia,” added the diplomat on W Radio.

Petro and Maduro already spoke by telephone following his election on June 19 as the first left-wing president of Colombia.

The future ruler hopes that with Maduro they can dislodge the armed groups that operate on both sides of the 2,200-kilometer border.

He is also confident that he will recover the fertilizer production of the Venezuelan company Monómeros, the center of the dispute between Caracas and opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whom the United States recognizes as interim president.

Within the framework of the new relations with Washington, Petro intends to modify the Free Trade Agreement in force since 2012 to stop importing some products, in favor of strengthening domestic agricultural production.

Without delving into this initiative, Palmieri commented that his country wants to “work with the new government, particularly in its efforts to improve the country’s economy and promote more economic equity.”
