The United States has taken new measures in its efforts to prevent China from producing the most advanced microprocessors on its own. The Department of Commerce has thus announced that it will extend export controls to four new categories of products, three of which directly concern the production of semiconductors. Restrictions include gallium oxide and diamond, two materials that enable semiconductors to operate in extreme conditions, and electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) software, which is used to design and optimize certain types of printed circuits.
“Technological advances that allow technologies like semiconductors and motors to operate faster, more efficiently, longer, and under harsher conditions can be a game-changer in commercial and military matters,” comments the Under Secretary of Commerce. for industry and security, Alan Estevez. When we recognize the risks as well as the benefits, and act in concert with our global partners, we can ensure that our common security goals are achieved, innovation is sustained, and businesses around the world operate on a sound footing. of equality”.
