The The Supreme Court of the United States agreed today to analyze the appeal of former President Donald Trumpwhich asked that a ruling by Colorado’s highest court that excludes him from this year’s primaries in that state be overturned for his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The Cutwhich established that oral arguments will be held on February 8, will review the ruling of the Colorado courtwhich in mid-December considered that Trump might not appear because he had been part of an insurrection, in reference to the attack by the former president’s followers on the headquarters of Congress, who sought to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being certified.

A Civil War-era amendment (1861-1865), prohibiting people who participated in an insurrection from holding elected office, was the legal basis used by the Colorado Supreme Court.

The same legal argument was applied by the maximum Maine state courtwhich a week later also excluded the former president from the Republican elections.

This week, when presenting the appeal to the Supreme Court, a spokesperson for the former president’s campaign, Steven Cheung, said in a statement that the Colorado court is “doing everything possible to disenfranchise all American voters”s when trying to remove President Trump, the main candidate in the 2024 elections.

«Los Democrats are obsessively violating constitutional law of American voters to vote for the candidate of their choice. “This is an act of anti-American and unconstitutional electoral interference that cannot be sustained,” he considered.

Three justices on the Court were appointed by Trump

The The defense of the former president asked the highest court, dominated by conservatives, including three justices appointed by Trumpagree to hear the case and “summarily overturn the decision of the Colorado Supreme Court.”

He argued that the ruling “if upheld, will mark the first time in American history that a court decision prevented voters from voting for the leading candidate of a major party.”

Trump, who starts as a favorite for the Republican primaries towards the November electionsfaces a series of lawsuits, two of them for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, both at the federal level and in the state of Georgia.

The Supreme Court’s decision on its exclusion in Colorado is expected to have national repercussionsas it might influence how other states approach the issue, NBC noted.
