The US recognizes that measures to achieve democratic elections in Venezuela have not been sufficient

this friday the person in charge for Latin America of the State Department, Brian Nicholsassured that the United States recognized that the measures taken to force Nicolás Maduro to guarantee democratic and clean elections in Venezuela have not been enough.

The Joe Biden administration official called on countries in the region to exert greater pressure. Likewise during a press conference He highlighted that the dates and deadlines announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE) are tight, which is why he assures that the situation in Venezuela is worrying, says Efe.

He also maintained that the incentives and actions that both the United States and the international community have carried out in search of democratic elections being held in the country “They have not motivated Maduro to carry out reforms, since he believes that his government is at risk”.

Nichols revealed that Joe Biden’s government plans to offer support to the Venezuelan opposition and, together with other nations, will evaluate how to respond in the event that the presidential elections on July 28 of this year do not comply with democratic norms.

The undersecretary recalled that Venezuela’s neighboring countries, including Colombia, Brazil and Guyana, hold transparent electoral processes and emphasized that Venezuelans also deserve a similar system.

“The leaders of those nations must continue to convey the message that the Venezuelan people deserves the same opportunities to elect their leaders in elections and have their decision respected,” he highlighted.

It must be remembered that the United States in November 2023 lifted some of the economic sanctions that weighed on Venezuela in order to negotiate clean elections in the country.

Despite this, the Venezuelan Justice ratified the political disqualification of the opposition leader María Corina Machado.

According to the electoral schedule presented this week by the CNE, political organizations must present their candidates between March 21 and 25, which gives the opposition two weeks to decide its strategy.

For its part, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela began a supposed consultation process that will conclude on March 15 with the proclamation of its candidate, foreseeably Maduro.
