The Middle East is “boiling” with the US on high alert following Iran’s threat to retaliate for the blow to the consular section of its embassy in Damascus, attributed to Israel.
“We are certainly on high alert,” said the official, who declined to be named, confirming a CNN report that an attack might take place next week as the situation in the Middle East remains unsettled.
According to the Revolutionary Guards, an elite body of the Iranian armed forces, the strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Tehran killed seven Iranian military advisers, including the top commander of their Al Quds Force, Mohammad Reza Zahedi.
Iran said it reserved its right to “give a decisive response” to the strike, which it blamed on Israel, which has not confirmed responsibility for it.
US President Joe Biden discussed the threat from Iran in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
“Our teams have been in regular and continuous contact since then. The US fully supports Israel’s defense once morest threats from Iran,” a senior Biden administration official said.
