The United States has returned more than 92,000 people to more than 130 countries since President Joe Biden issued an executive measure on June 4 that drastically restricts asylum applications at the border with Mexico.

This measure also influenced the 32% decrease in migrant arrests at that border in July, compared to last June, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) stressed in a statement. The reduction represents the lowest monthly figure since September 2020, it detailed.

According to CBP, due to the new immigration guidelines there was “a significant increase in the number of migrants expelled and returned to their countries of origin and a decrease in the number of persons released (in the US) pending their removal proceedings.”

Biden’s order has allowed US authorities to deport those who do not meet strict asylum standards when apprehensions at the border exceed 2,500 per day for an average of seven days.

CBP said that as of June 5, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expelled or returned more than 92,000 individuals, including by operating more than 300 international repatriation flights. The government recalled that “individuals and families who do not have a legal basis to remain in the U.S. are subject to deportation.”
