The US has not yet recognized Edmundo González as president

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller clarified on Monday that the White House has not yet recognized Edmundo González as president of Venezuela.

In this regard, they ask Chavismo and the opposition to negotiate a democratic transition.

“We are not at that point yet (of recognizing him as president). We are in close contact with our partners in the region, especially Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, to find a way forward,” the American official explained.

According to the spokesman, the US continues to “urge the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a peaceful transition back to democratic norms.”

“While we recognize that it has been more than a week since the election and that any publication of those votes would require careful scrutiny given the potential for manipulation,” he added.

He insisted, regarding the opposition candidate and the election results: “No, that is not a step we have taken yet (to recognize him as president), but we continue to make it clear that the will of the Venezuelan people must be respected.”
