Last Friday, the US Department of Justice filed a partial appeal once morest a court decision to stop reviewing documents seized from the residence of former US President Donald Trump in Florida.
It also called on the ministry to continue the investigation into these materials classified as “secret”.
Since last week, federal investigators have been prevented from reviewing thousands of documents seized by the FBI from Trump’s seaside home, following a judge sided with the former president and decided to appoint an independent supervisor to look into the files.
The Justice Department said in the complaint filed on Friday evening that Judge Eileen Cannon “fundamentally erred in appointing a special supervisor and issuing an injunction,” but noted that it would limit her appeal only to “regarding 100 documents marked confidential” found at Trump’s residence.
The ministry stated that the delay in reviewing confidential documents, which it stressed were government property, “hamper the government’s efforts to protect the nation’s security.”
Trump is facing mounting legal pressure, with the Justice Department reporting that top-secret documents were “likely hidden” in order to impede the FBI’s investigation into his possible mishandling of classified material. Trump denied that he had made any mistakes, and said that the raid that targeted his home was “among the most horrific attacks on democracy in the history of our country,” focusing on it at his political rallies.
A three-judge panel is scheduled to hear the appeal in the 11th Circuit Court, but the case may end in the Supreme Court. On Thursday, Judge Cannon appointed a “special supervisor”, Raymond Derry, to review the files.
