The parliamentary elections in Belarus were criticized by the United States. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called them “fictitious”, carried out without the necessary demographic procedures.

“The United States condemns the fictitious parliamentary and local elections organized by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko (President of Belarus – URA.RU note), which ended today in Belarus. The elections were held in an atmosphere of fear, and not a single electoral process can be called democratic,” it says in Miller’s statement on the State Department website.

The head of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, Igor Karpenko, commented on the US accusations during a press conference. He recommended that they take care of their own problems instead of trying to take on the role of the world’s beholder.

Elections to the lower house of parliament and local councils of deputies were held in Belarus 25 February. Karpenko, during a briefing at the end of the single voting day, said that the turnout at 20:00 was 72.98%. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the country Yuri Nazarenko said on the STV television channel that there were no gross violations of public order and the situation was under control.
