Washington – US President Joe Biden, yesterday, Tuesday, discussed by telephone common security issues between the two countries with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
The White House explained in a statement that President Biden held a phone call yesterday, Tuesday, with his Chinese counterpart, Xi, in which they “frankly and constructively” discussed a range of bilateral, regional and global issues.
Biden stressed “the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the rule of law, and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea,” according to the statement.
It is noteworthy that the United States, Japan, and South Korea, during the opening session of the “Trilateral Indo-Pacific Dialogue” on January 6, expressed their concerns regarding China’s “dangerous and escalating” behavior in the South China Sea.
The three countries stressed that “peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are indispensable for the security and prosperity of the international community.”
The US President expressed Washington’s “concerns” regarding China’s support for Russian defense industries and its impact on European and trans-Atlantic security.
Biden stressed the United States’ “permanent” commitment to the “completely” denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
He also addressed the United States’ “ongoing concerns” regarding China’s “unfair” trade policies and economic practices that harm American workers and families, without elaborating further.
The two sides welcomed continued efforts to maintain open channels of communication and manage the relationship responsibly through high-level diplomacy between the two countries, according to the White House statement.
For his part, the Chinese President said that “the two major countries should not sever their relations or turn their backs on each other, let alone slide into conflict or confrontation,” according to what was reported by the Chinese Public Broadcasting Corporation (CGTN).
Xi stressed three comprehensive principles guiding China-US relations this year.
The Chinese President said: “First, peace must be valued, and the two sides must set a basis for non-conflict or confrontation, and continue to enhance the positive outlook on the relationship” between the two countries.
He added: “Secondly, priority must be given to stability, and both sides must refrain from setting relations backwards, provoking incidents, or crossing borders, in order to preserve the comprehensive stability of relations.”
He continued: “Thirdly, credibility must be maintained, and both sides must respect their commitments to each other.”
The Chinese president stressed that Beijing and Washington need to “enhance dialogue in a manner of mutual respect, manage differences wisely, enhance cooperation in a spirit of mutual benefit, and enhance coordination in international affairs in a responsible manner,” according to the Chinese authority.
