Given the huge difference in charging infrastructure, the group, through the voice of Jean-Luc Crucke, is sounding the alarm. “Better late than never,” says the former minister. But it is late to react. Very late. The situation is dramatic. We have repeatedly asked that a commission be held in the Walloon Parliament regarding the installation of these terminals. It happened and experts came to alert us to the fact that there was no more time to lose. They told us what to do. But it didn’t move. Certainly Wallonia has a plan to reach 6,000 terminals. But it risks being largely insufficient to meet demand.”
Five times fewer charging stations for electric cars in the south of the country than in Flanders: why Wallonia has two voltages
For Jean-Luc Crucke, two factors are detrimental to the transition to the electric car in Wallonia. The price first, much higher than for a thermal car. “And then the availability of terminals. A motorist will never go electric if he cannot recharge his car. It makes sense, but the minister continues to say that mentalities must first be changed. However, mentalities will only change when the public has put the turbo and finally offers an adequate infrastructure. The minister must come back down to earth.”
According to Jean-Luc Crucke, Wallonia is “the only region” in Western Europe not to take “the full measure of the stakes.” And the Walloon MP went on to say that in addition to strengthening the infrastructure, we must also create incentives to purchase. “We must reduce the price difference between a thermal car and an electric one. And that goes through an ecological bonus, why not €5,000 as is the case in France? This is what the Walloon government should be working on, rather than on a car tax reform which, as it is thought, will handicap electric cars.
