The World Health Organization on Thursday urged both sides of the conflict in Sudan to stop fighting to allow people access to medical care when needed, and to open a humanitarian corridor for health workers.

The health organization said the insecurity causes challenges for doctors, nurses, patients and ambulances to access health facilities, and puts the lives of those in need of urgent medical care at risk.

The organization added that health facilities suffer from an acute shortage of water and fuel, while a number of water stations in Khartoum have stopped working.

Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, made the remarks during an online press conference, saying:

  • 330 people have been killed and 3,200 others injured since the start of the clashes in Sudan.
  • We will bring more medical supplies to Sudan as soon as the situation allows.
  • 15 hospitals were out of service in the capital, Khartoum.
  • Medical evacuation of seriously injured people in Sudan is not a realistic option at this time.
