The Unusual and Surprising Effects of Anesthesia: Sexual Hallucinations During Procedures

We do not all act the same way during anesthesia. Sedative-hypnotic medications, such as propofol, midazolam, diazepam and nitrous oxide, used in this procedure slow the brain, can disrupt the sense of reality and cause patients to experience sexual hallucinations. While some will make suggestive comments, others will take action by, for example, trying to kiss their doctor or even by masturbating. Some will even wake up wrongly thinking they have been sexually assaulted.

This phenomenon, known for a long time, has been confirmed by several studies. One of them, dating from 1984, notably revealed that 18% of people anesthetized during dental or medical operations had difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy during and shortly following the administration.

To try to understand why some patients have these sexual fantasies, pharmacology researchers Melody White and Dr C Michael White from the University of Connecticut (United States), whose comments were relayed by the Sun, reviewed all cases of sexual hallucinations published in the medical literature. They say a better understanding might help them determine how to effectively reduce the risk of hallucinations to keep patients and providers safe.

The cause of this phenomenon unknown

And if for the moment, the cause of this phenomenon has not yet been determined, they found a striking correspondence between the anatomical location of the procedure and the place where the patient touched himself, for example. Procedures involving the mouth were perceived as oral sex. Thoracic procedures like breast fondling and groin procedures like vaginal penetration. Meanwhile, squeezing a ball to make a vein more accessible was linked to the penis and masturbation.

They also recalled the results of a 2009 study, which found that people more likely to suffer from sexual hallucinations were given higher doses of anesthetics and were younger than 50 years old.
