according toUNILADAccording to reports, at the end of July 1945, the Portland class cruiser USS Indianapolis was responsible for transporting a large number of atomic bomb components to the Pacific island of Tinian. The assembled atomic bombs would be dropped on Japan. Hiroshima. However, the 1,195 officers and soldiers on board at that time could not have imagined that a terrible disaster was waiting for them.

After completing its mission, the Indianapolis headed to the Philippine Islands and was unfortunately discovered by the Japanese submarine No. 58 I at midnight on July 30. The Japanese launched an attack without hesitation and successfully torpedoed and sunk the American warship. The cruiser sank within 12 minutes, killing approximately 300 sailors in the process.

More than 800 crew members who survived the sinking of the cruiser spent a long night. When the sun rose in the early morning of the second day, they saw a terrifying sight: hundreds of shark fins appeared on the nearby sea. What attracts sharks is the blood of crew members who died or were injured in the explosion and sinking of the cruiser, as well as the many bodies floating in the sea.Large numbers of the most aggressive species of shark, the Oceanic whitetip shark, began to gather around the crew, who were wearing life jackets and floating in the water.

The frantic hunting soon attracted more and more sharks. When hundreds of sharks had eaten most of the corpses, they began to turn their attention to the still living people. The survivors soon realize that survival is only possible if they come together. In this way, they fight back against approaching sharks and keep an eye on each other for sharks behind them. However, injured people have little hope of survival in front of these greedy animals, and the sharks quickly eat them.

Due to insufficient lifeboats and a shortage of food and fresh water, the 890 surviving crew members who fell into the water not only had to be on guard against shark attacks at any time, but also had to face the threats of hypothermia and dehydration. Some crew members even started drinking sea water due to extreme thirst, leading to salt poisoning. . These people became extremely manic and began to bump around wildly. This behavior attracted more sharks, and the scene was like a purgatory on earth.

It was not until four days after the cruiser sank that a Lockheed PV-1 Ventura patrol aircraft discovered survivors who had fallen into the water during a patrol, and the Navy did not know that the Indianapolis had sunk. In the end, only 316 people survived, making it the tragedy with the largest death toll from a single ship sinking in the history of the US military, and the worst shark attack on record so far.

It is not known exactly how many crew members died in shark attacks, but estimates of directly shark-related deaths range from a few dozen to 150.

The U.S. Navy accused the captain of the Indianapolis, Charles McVay, of being responsible for the disaster, saying that he did not direct the cruiser to conduct a zigzag course, leaving the warship vulnerable to attack. In December 1945, McVeigh was tried by a military court. Although he was later restored to military duty, McVeigh ultimately could not bear the pressure of public opinion and chose to end his life. It was not until 2000 that President Clinton and Congress officially declared McVeigh innocent, but for him, an official pardon came decades too late.
